BBC Look East reported in 2012 that there were 27 Community Shops in the region. One of those is in Thorndon; in August 2011 the Village Stores, previously run by Darren Hayward, landlord of The Black Horse, was handed over to the community and renamed Thorndon Community Shop.
An enthusiastic local volunteer workforce was quickly formed and initially, to help it get off the ground, generous donations were made by both the Thorndon Parish and Community Councils. Grants were also received from Suffolk County Council and Mid Suffolk District Council.
Trading quickly developed beyond expectations and the shop has gone from strength to strength.
Customers can place regular orders for bread, meat and newspapers. Fresh bread is provided by the Tudor Bakehouse in Eye and is delivered on Tuesday and Friday; Pepperels supply meat which is delivered on Mondays and Fridays and award winning Palfrey & Hall supply bacon.
Milk is sourced from Suffolk & Norfolk herds through the local Halesworth Dairy, Marybelle Milk. Own label cakes and biscuits are available along with pickles and a wide selection of soups and other quick snacks. The shop has a comprehensive range of groceries, household items & simple medical remedies and in the chillers there are patés, cheeses and yogurts. Local eggs and honey are stocked and apple juice is supplied from the nearby Braiseworth Orchards.
Stationery, photocopier paper and a range of greetings cards & stamps is also available.
Volunteers are always needed; if you'd like to help click here. You may well find it very rewarding and it is certainly a way of meeting people!
